A NAME BURIED
IN HISTORY.
Before the legions, before the Republic, Rome had a first king, and the first king had a guard. Three hundred men. Romulus called them the Celeres.
- Raised by Romulus, first king of Rome, kept about his person in peace as well as in war.
- Their number: three hundred. Never more.
- Ten chosen from each of the thirty curiae, the most robust, from the most illustrious families.
- Named for what they were: celeres, the swift ones, quick at their tasks.
- Mounted on level ground, on foot on rough ground. First into the break, last to leave it.
- Commanded by the tribunus celerum. Disbanded by Numa, the king who came after.
WHAT THE SOURCES SAY
Livy (1.15) records that Romulus kept a bodyguard of three hundred men round him in peace as well as in war, and called them the Celeres. Dionysius (2.13) counts the same three hundred, the most robust and from the most illustrious families, ten chosen by each of the thirty curiae, named because the Romans call those quick at their tasks celeres; they fought mounted on level ground and on foot on rough ground. Livy (1.59) names their commander the tribunus celerum, an office Brutus held. Plutarch (Numa 7) tells how Numa's first act as king was to disband the body of three hundred that Romulus always kept about his person, and called Celeres, that is, swift ones.

300 CHOSEN.
Romulus did not raise a legion. He raised three hundred. The number is the whole point.
Every Celeres is one seat in that formation, numbered 1 to 300. The seats were claimed free, one per wallet, and all three hundred were taken within hours of the record opening. No reserve, no second run, no hidden mint function. The roll is full and the record is sealed. The seats now change hands only on the open market.
300 SEATS.
ALL TAKEN.
THE ROLL IS FULL.

FIRST IN.LAST OUT.
Speed was the duty. To be first where the line broke, and last to leave it. The ancient guard rode ahead of the king and stood behind him when the field emptied. The 300 carry the same order onto a new field: arrive first, hold the seat, remember everything.
SPEED · DUTY · SERVICE · MEMORY
BEFORE ROBINHOOD,
THERE WAS CELERIS.
CELERIS · 2010
In 2010, Vlad Tenev and Baiju Bhatt, math classmates at Stanford, founded their first company. They called it Celeris. It built algorithmic and high frequency trading software: systems, execution, code, and speed. It ran for about a year and was wound down in early 2011 as their next venture began.
The company ended. In our lore, the guard it raised did not. Three hundred soldiers sworn to speed, dismissed when the field changed, buried in a founding story almost nobody tells. Sixteen years on they are awake, on the chain Robinhood built: the 300 Celeres, descendants and disciples of the first company.
Celeris and Celeres share one Latin root: celer, swift. That is the whole of the documented link, and we say so plainly. The echo is ours. We built the archive on it.
SEPARATED BY MILLENNIA.
CONNECTED HERE BY SPEED.
READ THE FRAGMENT
No founder quote survives to say why the name was chosen. What remains is a Latin word for swift, stamped on a company that lived about a year before Chronos began and Robinhood followed. Engineers from Celeris and Chronos joined Robinhood's founding team. That is the line we trace: a guard of three hundred swift ones, a company whose name means swift, the chain its founders' later company built. Time buried the first name. Speed brought it back.

SPEED MEETS TIME.
2011 · CHRONOS
In early 2011 the same two founders started Chronos Research. It built low latency algorithmic trading software and licensed it to banks and hedge funds. Bootstrapped, it grew to a few million in revenue in about a year, then the founders moved to California.
If Celeris is speed, Chronos is time. The Greek name for time itself, made into software that measured markets in fractions of a second. In our lore the hourglass turned here: the guard was dismissed, the swift ones scattered, and the archive began to wait. It waited for a field where anyone could ride.
THE HOURGLASS
Chronos sold speed to the people who already had it. Tenev said as much later: "We built the technology and licensed it to financial institutions who couldn't really compete," and "Our customers were already rich." That admission is the hinge of the whole story. Speed for the few was a solved problem. The next question was who gets to be swift.

FROM INFRASTRUCTURE
TO ACCESS.
Celeris and Chronos built speed for the few. Robinhood came out of stealth on April 18, 2013 with a free stock app for iPhone, opened zero commission trading in December 2014, and opened its doors to everyone in March 2015. The stated mission: democratize finance for all.
Engineers from Celeris and Chronos joined the founding team. The same hands that built execution for banks built access for everyone. Tenev is Chairman and CEO; Bhatt is co founder. The road runs from a guard of three hundred, to a company named for speed, to the front door of the market.

THE ARCHIVE REMEMBERS.
Six drawers, each labelled in the old tongue. Campus, the field. Corpus, the body. Panoply, the armour. Caput, the head. Visus, the sight. Morsus, the bite. Every trait is a fragment of the record. Open the drawers and read what the soldiers carry.
- OPENING THE DRAWERS...
Click a drawer. The archive answers with what it remembers about that trait, and which of the 300 carry it.
THE CHOSEN.
Three hundred side profiles, drawn one pixel at a time, numbered 1 to 300. Each is a seat in the formation and a name on the roll. Find yours. Then find the one beside it.

FROM ROME
TO THE TERMINAL.
The guard was dismissed in Rome. The company was wound down in 2011. Both wake on the same ground: Robinhood Chain.
Robinhood Chain went live on July 1, 2026, launched in London: a Layer 2 based on Arbitrum, EVM compatible, permissionless, gas paid in ETH, built for tokenized real world assets and 24/7 trading. Chain ID 4663. The contract is public and every seat is verifiable on robinhoodchain.blockscout.com. The 300 ride where the record can be read by anyone.

10% CREATOR FEE ON EVERY SALE.
5% TO THE HOLDERS, AUTOMATICALLY.
5% TO THE TREASURY.
Rome paid its soldiers a stipendium. So does the archive. Ten percent of every secondary sale returns to the contract on chain. Half is pushed to the treasury. Half accrues automatically and equally to the 300 seats, seat by seat, sale by sale, with no snapshot and no sign up. Hold a seat and your share waits for you here.
Accrued pay travels with the seat. Sell without claiming and the pay goes with it to the buyer.
Connect the wallet that holds your seats to see what they are owed, then collect it in one transaction.
